Ice Cream in a bag
What you will need to make a smooth and creamy delight! · 1/2 cup milk · 1/2 cup whipping cream (heavy cream) · 1/4 cup sugar · 1/4 teaspoon vanilla or vanilla flavoring (vanillin-that’s imitation vanilla flavoring if you were wondering) · 1/2 to 3/4 cup sodium chloride (NaCl) as table salt or rock salt · 2 cups ice · 1-quart plastic bag with a zipper like a ZiplocTM bag · 1-gallon plastic bag with a zipper like a ZiplocTM bag · thermometer · measuring cups and spoons · cups and spoons for eating your treat! Directions to create your yummy ice cream 1. Add 1/4 cup sugar, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 cup whipping cream, and 1/4 teaspoon vanilla to the quart plastic bag with zipper, like a ziplocTM bag. Seal the bag securely. 2. Put 2 cups of ice into the gallon plastic bag with a zipper like a ziplocTM bag. 3. Use a thermometer to measure and record the temperature of the ice in the gallon bag. 4. Add 1/2 to 3/4 cup salt (sodium chloride) to the bag of ice. The bigger the salt crystals the better it works. 5. Place the sealed quart bag inside the gallon bag of ice and salt. Seal the gallon bag securely. 6. Gently rock the gallon bag from side to side. It's best to hold it by the top seal or to have gloves or a cloth between the bag and your hands because the bag will be cold enough to damage your skin. 7. It’s easier if you put this all in a giant coffee tub. Some scout shops also sell a hamster like wheel ball for this purpose. 8. Continue to rock the bag or bin for 10-15 minutes or until the contents of the quart bag have solidified into ice cream. 9. Open the gallon bag and use the thermometer to measure and record the temperature of the ice/salt mixture. 10. Remove the quart bag, open it, serve the contents into cups with spoons and ENJOY! So why does this work so well? Here’s why! Ice has to absorb energy in order to melt, changing the phase of water from a solid to a liquid. When you use ice to cool the ingredients for ice cream, the energy is absorbed from the ingredients and from the outside environment (like your hands, if you are holding the baggie of ice!). Adding salt to the ice helps to lower its freezing point. This makes the ice cream get colder even faster. Through this process the ice becomes colder than it was before. This is what causes the ice cream to freeze. The whole thing works best when you use ice cream salt or giant salt crystals. The bigger they are the better it works. |

How to make slime
Have you ever wondered if you could make slime? We'll show you how soon. Who doesn’t love to play with some slime. It’s gooey, it’s slippery, its kind of gross, but always fun to play with. Here’s how you make it at home. Here’s a list of ingredients you’ll need. It’s always more fun to share your slime with a sister or other sibling. · water · white glue (like Elmer's™) · borax · food coloring (unless you want uncolored white slime) To make slime you need borax and water solution and a glue, water, and food coloring. Prepare them separately. · Mix 1 teaspoon borax in 1 cup of water. Stir until the borax is dissolved. · In a separate container, mix 1/2 cup (4 oz) white glue with 1/2 cup water. Add food coloring, if desired. Once the borax has dissolved, and the glue has been diluted, you can then combine the two. You should begin to see the slime polymerize, or start to turn into the slime. Then the slime should start to harden a bit. Mix it as much as possible, then finish mixing it with your hands. You should have some left over colored water. You can now start to play with your slime. It will become slightly firmer so you will be able to mold it into different shapes. Make sure not to leave it on any furniture or surface since it could cause water damage, or stain it the same color as your slime. To make your slime last longer stick it in a plastic bag like a ziplock bag and keep it sealed. This works best if you refrigerate it. Obviously as time goes on it will evaporate. Then what? Start over and show some friends how to do it. Remember have an adult help you to make sure you are doing right, and keep furniture, and counters safe.  |
