Merit Badges
To achieve the highest rank of Eagle Scout, a total of 21 merit badges minimum must be earned. This is along with other requirements, and off course an approved Eagle Project. Of the 21 merit badges, there were 13 which are required, or also called Eagle Badges. This requirement has been changed to 14. The scout must also complete an additional 8 merit badges of their choice. This requirement was reduced to 7. The overall total remains at 21. Currently there are 135 merit badges. Regular merit badges are identifiable by a green trim. Eagle merit badges have a white/silver ring on them.

Additional Merit Badges Needed to Earn EagleIf a scout does two or more of 7, 8, or 9, any additional badges in that category will ONLY count as electives. Let's say a scout does all 18 merit badges listed, they would get credit for the 14 that are required for eagle, and would have earned an additional 4 of the 8 electives needed. Scouts are given a great deal of latitude on which merit badges to do, and explore. It is a great way for them to test different interests, skills, and help them find their calling. *** NOTE: As of July 1, 2022, a 14th REQUIRED Eagle 🦅 merit badge was added.
